1. Predict
Offer A: 3 pounds for $6.
Offer B: 4 pounds for $10.
2. Investigate
Keep A the same. Change B’s total price and compare equal one-pound groups.
Offer A
3 pounds for $6
$6 ÷ 3 lb = $2.00 per pound
Offer B
- Find a price that makes the two unit prices equal.
- Find a price where B has a higher total than A but a lower price per pound.
- Explain why comparing the two totals alone is not enough.
This is a mathematical model with invented prices, one fixed rate within each offer, and no fees or discounts. It is not a report of store prices.
Visual word bank / Banco de palabras
$ ÷ lb · Unit rate / tasa unitaria: the cost for one pound.
1 lb · Per / por: for each one. $2 per pound means each pound costs $2.
$6 · Total / total: the cost of the whole offer.
Plan in a home language, use a drawing, or talk with a partner before writing.
“For one pound, A costs ___ and B costs ___. This means ___ because ___.”
3. Explain and revisit
4. Try a new case
Compare 5 pounds for $9 with 3 pounds for $6. Which costs less per pound? Explain.
